ECHA Adds Five (5) Hazardous Chemicals to the Candidate List – Is Your Business Prepared?
The Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) has grown to 247 entries, following ECHA’s latest update. These substances, which pose risks to human health or the environment, bring significant compliance responsibilities for companies under the REACH Regulation.
Five (5) substances added & one (1) entry updated:
- Two new vPvB substances: 1) Octamethyltrisiloxane and 2) perfluamine, used in the manufacture of washing/cleaning products and electrical, electronic, and optical equipment
- Two new PBT substances: 1) O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate, used in lubricants and greases, and 2) Reaction mass of triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives, identified to prevent regrettable substitution
- One new toxic-for-reproduction substance: 6-[(C10-C13)-alkyl-(branched, unsaturated)-2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl]hexanoic acid, used in lubricants, greases, and metalworking fluids
- Updated entry: Tris(4-nonylphenyl, branched and linear) phosphite, now classified as an environmental endocrine disruptor, used in polymers, adhesives, sealants, and coatings

What this means for businesses
If your products, mixtures, or articles contain these substances, you have legal obligations, including:
1) notifying ECHA under the Candidate List or SCIP database requirements
2) informing customers and consumers about safe use
3) updating safety data sheets and ensuring compliance with downstream communication
These substances may also move toward inclusion on the Authorisation List. Now is the time for companies to start developing strategies to either substitute these substances or advocating their continued use.
